The benefits of cooking: There is a scientific reason why the kitchen soothes you
The benefits of cooking
According to a study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology, psychologists have found that we feel an improvement in mood after doing something creative. The study measured the effects of daily creative activities in a group of 658 people over 13 days and concluded that “participants felt more peaceful and optimistic after performing a more creative activity than usual”.
Cooking was one of the daily creative activities performed by the study participants. And the kitchen clearly calls for a creative effort. In addition, the feeling of accomplishment is very positive for our personal development.
In short, making pastries or good meals is just as useful as eating them.
And yes, it’s the science that says it
This is not the first time that the benefits of cooking are brought to light and that a correlation between cooking and mood enhancement is made.
Huma Qureshi, of The Guardian, wrote an article in 2013 where he explains how cooking can help people with mood or mental health issues. He wrote:
Just mixing the dough and working the edges gave me a “focus”. My cookies were still burning around the edges and I do not even remember if we ended up eating them, but I remember that the feeling of having realized them myself gave me a fabulous feeling of well being.
Between attention, creativity, the sense of accomplishment of the final product, cooking is a great way to live fully in the moment and gain some peace of mind. (As well as some pieces of pie)
If you’re not especially keen on cooking, there are other creative activities that provide the same result, like knitting or doing!
Basically all that you do not do by telling yourself that you “do not have the time” is certainly a good thing for your well-being.

Your brain deserves a break and your stomach deserves a cupcake, so put yourself in the kitchen!
